About Wombats Australia
Andy McLeod is the person behind Wombats Australia. He first became interested in wombats when he and his family purchased 100 acres at Woodlands in the Southern Highlands of NSW.
In his own words...
It’s hard to remember now, but back in 2018 we were in a terrible drought. We noticed that the wombats living on the property were very poor, there was virtually no feed at all. We put out water stations but as a farmer, being trained to care for animals, I contacted the local wombat community to find out - what wombats eat – we just couldn’t bear to see them so obviously hungry.
We started putting oaten-hay and xtra cool out each day, and they responded. Each evening, we’d watch these grey boulders come meandering up the hill to the feed stations. We’d get home from work and they’d be waiting for us on the back porch. If we were late, they’d savage the broom.
It was then I started to realise how clever they are, how each wombat has a completely different personality from the next, they are playful, affectionate, obstinate, stoic.
"A wild wombat should be seen as nothing less than national treasure. They are the oldest marsupials on earth, they are incredibly intelligent and to know a wombat is to have a connection with something that is ancient."
